A caption with a beginning, a middle and an end

A good caption does not need to be long. It needs a small shape: something was one way, something happened, now it is another.

People remember stories and forget announcements. You do not need a long post to tell one. Three beats are enough.

The three beats

  1. 1Where things stood. One sentence of setup: the problem, the plan or the starting point.
  2. 2What happened. The turn — the thing that went wrong, changed or surprised you.
  3. 3Where it ended up. The result, and one thing the reader can take.

An example, in outline

“We had three weeks to finish forty orders. The printer broke on the first Monday. We borrowed one from a neighbour, worked nights, and sent the last box on day twenty. Next time we will book a second printer in January.” Four sentences, a shape and a lesson.

Keep it small and specific

  • One moment, not the whole history.
  • A named detail — the neighbour, the Monday, the number — makes it believable.
  • The ending can be modest. A small result that is true beats a big one that is not.

When not to

Not every post needs a story. A price, an opening time or a link can simply be that. Use the shape when you want something remembered.

Read the caption and ask what happened in it. If nothing did, it is an announcement — fine, but call it one.

Stop watching the clock. Start drifting.
