Tagging, collabs, and the etiquette nobody explains

A tag is a request for somebody's attention and a claim on their audience. Both are fine when earned and obvious when not.

Tagging is free, which is why it is overdone. Every tag says: this post is relevant to you, and to the people who follow you. Sometimes that is true.

When a tag is welcome

  • They are in it — the photograph, the work, the room
  • You are crediting them for something they actually did
  • You agreed beforehand that this post was coming

When it is not

Tagging ten accounts in the hope that one reshares is a strategy people can see from a distance, and it is the reason so many accounts now hide tagged posts by default.

Collaborations, properly

A collab post appears on both profiles and pools the reach. It is a real mechanic and it works, but it needs both people to accept it — which means it needs a conversation first, not a surprise notification.

A tag borrows an audience. A collab shares one.

Credit is the cheapest thing you can give and the most remembered. The photographer, the venue, the person who made the thing you are holding — name them, even when nobody would have noticed the omission.

Stop watching the clock. Start drifting.
