Instagram will never tell you what people searched for

The API reports where reach came from — feed, profile, explore, hashtags — but never the search terms. Anyone showing you keywords is guessing.

A question that comes up constantly: which search terms brought people to my post? The honest answer is that Instagram does not expose them, and no legitimate tool can show you what the platform does not report.

What the API does give you

Reach is broken down by source, and those sources are useful:

  • Home — people who follow you, seeing it in their feed
  • Profile — people who came to your profile and then to the post
  • Explore — the recommendation surface, i.e. people who do not follow you
  • Hashtags — reach attributed to a hashtag the post used
  • Other — everything else, including shares in DMs

That is enough to answer the question that matters. If Explore is a large share, the algorithm is pushing you to new people and you should keep making that kind of post. If it is almost all Home, you are talking to the audience you already have.

Why keywords are different

Search terms are query data about individual people. Meta treats that as personal data and does not hand it to third-party apps. This is not an oversight waiting to be fixed.

If a dashboard shows you Instagram search keywords, it is either inferring them from hashtags — which is a guess dressed as a metric — or it is scraping, which puts the connected account at risk.

Working without them

Hashtag-attributed reach is the closest legitimate signal. Vary your hashtags deliberately between posts and watch which sets move that number. It is slower than a keyword report, and it is real.

Stop watching the clock. Start drifting.
