Working with small creators: how to ask and what to offer

A creator with two thousand loyal followers can do more for a small business than a famous one who does not care. The trick is asking properly.

Small creators are often the right fit for small businesses: their audiences are real, local and interested, and they are reachable. The way you approach them matters more than your budget.

Choose well

  • Read what they actually post and how people reply. Replies matter more than follower counts.
  • Look for fit with your product, not for the biggest number.
  • Check that they have worked with brands without turning into one long advert.

Write a message they would want to read

  1. 1Say who you are in one line.
  2. 2Say what you noticed about their work — something specific.
  3. 3Say what you are proposing and what you can give: a product, a fee, or both.
  4. 4Make it easy to say no.

Agree the details in writing

  • What they will make, roughly when, and on which networks.
  • Who owns the content afterwards and where you may reuse it.
  • Disclosure. Paid or gifted posts have to be labelled as such, in the way each network and each country requires.
  • Do not dictate a script. Their audience trusts their voice.

Measure it

Give each creator their own tracked link, so you can see how many visits came from them. Postgust can add tracking tags to the links in a post, which makes this much easier.

A creator who says no politely is a good sign. Thank them and move on.
